Beginning Journalism at Palo Alto High School will soon be offered as a weighted, dual enrollment course with Foothill College.
According to journalism teacher and adviser Brian Wilson, the change was made in hopes of attracting more students to Paly’s robust journalism program. It comes after adding two new classes last year, giving ninth graders the option to take one semester of Broadcast Journalism along with one semester of Photojournalism to be qualified to join a publication the first semester of their sophomore year.
“Last year, we took a major step forward by adding two new classes,” Wilson said. “Next year feels like another logical step toward providing students with awesome journalistic opportunities.”

According to Paly journalism teacher Brian Wilson, the Beginning Journalism curriculum will remain largely the same, despite becoming a dual enrollment course.
“The course itself probably, honestly, is not going to change very much, because most of the components that … make it feel like it’s corresponding to what they offer at Foothill are already in place,” Wilson said. “So, there probably will be a little bit of tweaking … but, to be honest, the course as it is is pretty much going to look the same.”
