Verde is a features and news magazine produced by students at Palo Alto High School and currently under adviser Paul Kandell. It published its first issue in Fall 1999 under adviser Esther Wojcicki and a team of 20 initial staff members. That first year, the magazine received a warm welcome from the Paly community and won the National Scholastic Press Association Pacemaker Award, one of the two most prestigious awards in scholastic journalism. The next year, under Kandell, Verde took the other major national award, a Gold Crown, from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Since then, Verde has maintained a reputation of excellence within the scholastic journalism community. The publication received both the Pacemaker and the Gold Crown awards for the 2016-2017 academic year.
